The Phoenix Children’s Centre Hall transformed into a vibrant hub of possibility and purpose as Phoenix Child Welfare (PCW) hosted its third session of the Youth Mentoring Programme – a vibrant gathering of passionate young people eager to grow, learn, and lead. The energy in the room was electric, setting the perfect tone for a day filled with motivation, knowledge, and purpose.

The day began on a heartfelt note with an inspiring welcome from PCW social worker, Nolwazi Ngcobo, who urged the youth to make the most of the opportunity to build authentic relationships and take their personal journeys seriously. Her heartfelt words laid the foundation for a dynamic programme that blended inspiration with practical life skills.

Setting the tone with history and heart, Dr Muni Kooblal, a respected and long-serving board member of PCW, took the audience on a journey through the organisation’s 43-year legacy. He painted a vivid picture of how Phoenix Child Welfare has grown from humble beginnings into a pillar of strength in the community – one that continues to uplift families, protect children, and champion youth development.

Adding fresh perspective and practical wisdom, Innocent Msani, Manager at Lungisani Indlela Trust, brought the room to life with his dynamic presentation on personal development. He tackled key themes such as setting goals, navigating career paths, and the importance of teamwork. Msani’s hands-on, interactive style encouraged self-reflection and sparked powerful discussions among the youth about their dreams and the steps they need to take to achieve them.

Mr Mohale Moloi, human rights and advocacy facilitator from Africa Unite, delivered a high-energy session focused on mental health, emotional resilience, and coping strategies – equipping youth with tools to navigate challenges both inside and outside the classroom.

Closing the day on a motivating note, Social Work Manager at PCW, Mala Govender, delivered a powerful call to action. She encouraged attendees to give back by becoming volunteers in their communities and take the lead in shaping the world they want to live in. Her message was clear: “leadership begins with service, and every young person has the power to influence change.”

The event featured interactive group activities, sparking joy, laughter, and genuine connection among attendees. The Youth Mentoring Programme is quickly becoming a beacon for young people seeking to grow, make meaningful connections, and prepare for life beyond the classroom.

Those interested in joining the programme can contact Mala Govender on 031 500 3671 during office hours. The programme is open to young people between the ages of 14 and 25.
