The Rotary Club of Phoenix prides itself on empowering and uplifting communities, and last month was no different for the non-profit organisation as they rounded-off August by hosting a celebration for the women of Phoenix.
The club arranged a comedy show to uplift the spirits of women and allow them to kick back, relax and laugh all their worries away. Club president, Clinton Samuel said this celebration was definitely needed after two years of lockdown, the riots and the devastating floods in April. “Our guests thoroughly enjoyed themselves and got their hands on the many prizes that were up for grabs. The phenomenal Bash with Tash was the highlight of the show and was, of course, hilarious, spontaneous and inspiring to the audience. We are certain that besides a great laugh, the audience, both men and women, left feeling motivated and empowered by her journey,” said Samuel. He said that the club wishes to thank Bash with Tash, as she performed at no charge giving the club an opportunity to fundraise for their annual bursary project, and Malaika, who had the audience working for the prizes that they won by showing off their talents. The Rotary Bursary Fund Project aids a tertiary student in their studies by contributing towards the student’s tuition fees.
Samuel said the bursary project began seven years ago in an effort to give tertiary students the opportunity to further their studies at a university, technical university, FET college or TVET College. “The intention is to empower and change the circumstances of students and their families. There are many hardworking and intelligent young minds that do not have the financial means to further their education and it was for this reason that the club decided to initiate the project and contribute towards the tuition of one student at a time until the completion of their studies. Over the years, we have given several students an opportunity to change their circumstances. The Rotary Club of Phoenix thanked all who supported and made the event a great success,” added Samuel. The Rotary Club is part of an international service organisation that comprises of volunteers who wish to serve their community and welcomes sponsorships to undertake the various community upliftment projects the club is involved in.
