University of KwaZulu-Natal graduate, Lerisha Dabi, is kick starting her career after majoring and obtaining her bachelors degree in optometry with Cum Laude, following four years of study period at the prestigious institute.
The 22-year old, who is passionate about doing good for others, grew up in Phoenix and attended Danville Park Girls’ High School. Dabi said optometry was her first choice at university and that was excited when she received her acceptance at UKZN.
“I chose optometry because I am passionate about helping people and improving their lives. I strongly believe that an individual’s sight is their most valuable sense and being an optometrist would allow me to protect just that,” said Dabi.
Aiming to one day run her own practice, Dabi is already a step ahead of her peers as she is part of the 2022 Specsavers graduate programme, for top optometry.
“I had many challenges while studying, online learning was a huge adjustment especially in a practical based degree and there were definitely times when everything got a bit too much to handle, in those times I always tried to stay focussed by studying as much as I could and leaving the rest in my Gods hands. The only advice I can give to other students is that you should always try your hardest and be consistent with your studies, and before you know it the day will come where you see your hard work pay off – I know I have,” said Dabi.
She shared that her university years was incredible, as she had a great group of friends and lecturers, who helped her class along the way.
“Since I was in school for 12 years and university for four years, graduating meant the end of a 16 year-long study career, so it actually felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I was also quite emotional on graduation day, simply because everything I had worked so hard for was finally being paid off, and I was very thankful for that,” said Dabi.
The graduate also applauded fellow classmates and the rest of 2021 graduates. “I know each and every one of you put so much time into your studies so now is the time to reap the rewards of your success and celebrate,” she said.
