The community of Chatsworth is mourning the loss of a revered leader and spiritual figure, John “Appa” Kisten, who passed away on Tuesday, 7 April.

Kisten, who hailed from the historic Magazine Barracks community, was widely respected for his lifelong commitment to service, culture, and faith. His passing has left a deep void among family, friends, and the many lives he touched over decades of unwavering dedication.

In a heartfelt tribute, Kiru Naidoo described Kisten as a man whose “legacy transcends mere accolades” and is “woven into the very fabric of Chatsworth’s identity.”
Known affectionately as “Appa,” he was more than a community leader—he was a mentor, spiritual guide, and a symbol of resilience.

Kisten’s life journey reflected both hardship and triumph. Like many families from Magazine Barracks, he was forcibly displaced during the apartheid era in the 1960s. The removals saw the destruction of homes and significant cultural landmarks, including one of the oldest Hindu temples in the country, the original Shri Vishnu Temple, which dated back to the 1870s.

Despite these challenges, Kisten rose as a pillar of strength within his community. He dedicated his life to preserving cultural and religious traditions, serving as a prayer leader, priest, and advisor. His influence extended beyond Chatsworth, reaching communities as far as Tongaat, where his guidance and wisdom were equally valued.

His commitment to nurturing the younger generation stood out as one of his most enduring contributions. Through mentorship and spiritual teachings, Kisten worked tirelessly to ensure that cultural identity and faith practices continued to thrive among youth.

The Chatsworth Magazine Barracks Shree Vishnu Temple community also paid tribute, expressing profound sadness at the loss of their “beloved Appa and Guru.” In a statement, the temple committee extended condolences to his family, friends, and the broader community, praying for strength and comfort during this difficult time.

Tributes have also poured in from the wider spiritual community. Guru Ravi Govender of the Bayview Sithambaram Alayam described Kisten as “humble to the core,” adding that his absence will be deeply felt across the spiritual fraternity. “His dedication to uplifting people was always his highest priority. His vast knowledge of scriptures and his delivery of the Vedas were truly inspiring. May he rest in peace,” he said.

As tributes continue to pour in, John ‘Appa’ Kisten is remembered not only for his service, but for the compassion, humility, and strength that defined his life. His legacy remains deeply rooted in the community he helped shape, one built on faith, unity, and resilience.
