As a registered Educational Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), Budhal brings a depth of understanding to the holistic development of pupils, focusing on both academic excellence and psychological well-being.

A cornerstone of Budhal’s career has been his ability to blend scholarly achievement with hands-on leadership. In recognition of his invaluable contributions to education, he was awarded the prestigious Lifetime Award by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) at the National Teachers’ Awards in 2022 and, in 2023, the AKS Global Principal’s Award. These accolades are a tribute to his impact on the lives of pupils and his enduring commitment to excellence in South African education.

Beyond administrative duties, Budhal is a prolific author, having published five books that are now invaluable resources for researchers and teachers alike. His publications are frequently cited in academic journals, and his insights have provided a foundation for innovative educational practices.

A principal who believes in practical involvement, Budhal is known to “get his hands dirty,” quite literally, by taking an active role in the school’s construction and development projects. Whether leading a building initiative, supervising maintenance work, or implementing aesthetic improvements, he demonstrated that leadership is about service and commitment to one’s environment. His unwavering dedication has left a lasting imprint on the physical and cultural landscape of Rose Heights Primary, creating a learning environment where pupils feel inspired, supported, and valued.

His contributions are not limited to academics alone. Budhal’s culinary skills are well known and admired within the school community. His skill in the kitchen reflects his creative spirit and his desire to foster a sense of community, often bringing colleagues together over meals prepared with his signature flair. His multifaceted talents have set him apart as a leader who engages with his staff on multiple levels, understanding the importance of morale and camaraderie in an educational setting.

A keen sportsman, Budhal’s dedication to physical fitness has been equally inspiring. Over the years, he has completed five Comrades Marathons and several other ultra-marathons, including the Two Oceans Marathon, embodying resilience, determination, strength and qualities he has seamlessly integrated into his professional life. His participation in these gruelling events is a testament to his belief in setting and achieving ambitious goals, a lesson he has imparted to his learners and peers alike. Budhal’s love for sports also extends to his pupils, encouraging them to cultivate discipline, teamwork, and perseverance through active engagement in school sports.

His influence at Rose Heights Primary will undoubtedly be missed. While he steps away from his formal role in education, his journey continues as he embarks on a new chapter of service in 2025, taking up an internship position at RK Khan Hospital to further his work as a clinical psychologist. This transition reflects his lifelong commitment to personal growth and community service. In his retirement from formal schooling, he remains dedicated to the development and well-being of others, a value that has defined his career and will surely guide him in his new role.

Behind his professional accomplishments, Budhal’s strength and motivation have always been rooted in the love and support of his family. Together with his wife and three children, his family has stood by him throughout his extraordinary journey. They have been his inspiration and foundation, grounding him amid his many achievements and the demands of his professional life. Equally instrumental were his late parents, whose unwavering support and encouragement set the foundation for his studies and success. Their values and dedication to education have left an indelible mark on Budhal, shaping his passion for lifelong learning and his commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others.

Budhal’s tenure as principal of Rose Heights Primary School has left an unforgettable mark on both the institution and the broader educational landscape, and his legacy continues to shape the community. Notably, his advocacy for children’s welfare culminated in November being celebrated as Children’s Month. Under Budhal’s leadership, this initiative was more than just a seasonal observance; it was a commitment to highlighting the importance of nurturing young minds and fostering their growth in every aspect of their lives. By dedicating an entire month to children, Budhal not only promoted educational excellence but also prioritised their emotional and psychological well-being, principles that are central to his role as an educational psychologist.

This approach ensured that the focus of the month extended beyond academics to include the overall well-being of pupils, recognising that a child’s development is multidimensional and requires holistic support.

Budhal’s work and November being commemorated as Children’s Month was a testament to his vision of education as a comprehensive journey, one that balances intellectual, emotional, and social growth. His ability to integrate his academic expertise with a strong emotional intelligence allowed him to create an environment where pupils felt seen, heard, and valued.

In celebrating Children’s Month, he provided a platform for young pupils to engage with various activities and events designed to boost their self-esteem, promote positive mental health, and foster a sense of community. This initiative has since become an enduring part of Rose Heights Primary’s calendar, and its impact is felt far beyond the school gates, creating a ripple effect of awareness and advocacy for children’s rights and well-being across the region.

As pupils, teachers and family celebrate Budhal’s distinguished career, they acknowledge that his legacy will endure in the hearts and minds of those he has influenced. Rose Heights Primary extends its heartfelt gratitude to Budhal for his immeasurable contributions to the school, the community, and the field of education as a whole. His leadership, compassion, and unwavering commitment to excellence have set a standard that will inspire future generations of teachers, pupils, and all who have had the privilege of working alongside him.
