Learners from Dr Macken Mistry Primary School
Born-free learners from Dr Macken Mistry Primary School in Sea Cow Lake commemorated Freedom Day by remembering the 1994 struggle heroes who fought for freedom and a democratic South Africa.
Freedom Day is celebrated on 27 April each year. This day honours the anniversary of South Africa’s first non-racial election which took place in 1994. The day also pays homage to the country’s liberation from apartheid rule, where the minority exercised political power over the majority of the country. On 27 April 1994, the first non-racial election was held in the country. South Africa celebrates Freedom Day to mark the liberation of the country and its people from 300 years of colonialism, White-minority domination, politically-enforced prejudice and apartheid. The young learners spoke about what Freedom Day means to them. Grade 7 learner, Luyanda Semhle Ngcobo,12, said: “To me, Freedom Day means that I can attend any school despite my race or cultural background. It also means that I am free to have friends from different races.
As born-frees we now enjoy good education, all thanks to the sacrifices made by the 1994 freedom fighters like Tata Nelson Mandela.” Another learner, Lusanda Nene,12, said: “Freedom Day is a historical day which makes me happy and I feel empowered. It reminds us of the first democratic election in South Africa. The day brings all South Africans together as we celebrate ubuntu. We as young people are free to achieve our dreams.”
