Club Pairs were played this past weekend with seven men’s teams but sadly only two ladies’ teams. The men’s teams were very strong and some good bowls were played. The weather was perfect and as usual, the greens were running really well.
The third round on Saturday afternoon would determine who would be playing the finals on Sunday morning. With it being seven teams, the one section had to have a bye, the first bye got drawn by our youngest bowlers, Adil and James, so they watched the opposition and planned their strategy – and it paid off. They lost their first game, but won their second game with a commanding lead so they made it to play in the finals, now who did they get to play against? Donovan Fischer and Brett Gilder.
Sunday morning, the teams arrived and so did quite a few spectators. Who would come out on top? Our youngest men, Adil, 17, and James, 18, also bearing in mind James is the son of his opposition Brett, or the slightly older pair of Don and Brett. The game was very close until the last two ends when Adil and James managed to pick up a four and then two. So there we have it, the youngest men’s club pairs in many a year.
Don and Brett put up an amazing fight but alas it was not their day. Well done to everybody, but a huge congratulations to Adil and James.
Now, sadly, the ladies’ game was very unexciting. Barbara Elworthy and Veronica Malan got on the greens and decided to teach Janet and Shenaaz what the game is all about. All I can say, being on the losing team, we had a fun-filled afternoon and can honestly say Veronica and Barbara played outstanding bowls. Congratulations to all four ladies but especially the Ladies Club Pairs winners, Barbara and Veronica.
This coming weekend will see members head off to Bergville to take part in the Midlands Men’s and Ladies 4’s. Good bowling to all those taking part. Just a small mention, the Joker total is standing at R11 000, sorry for all of you who can’t make Friday nights, somebody is going to be very happy one day soon.
