Berea SAPS and the nation’s Community Policing Unit and the Department of Community Safety and Liaison recently joined forces to give Berea SAPS a facelift as part of their Mandela Month initiative.
Lungelo Zulu, CPF chair, said the aim is to make the police station more welcoming. “Most people who come to the police station are there because of trauma or problems which need to be reported to the police. People do not just come to the station for fun. Therefore, when they come into a place that is not welcoming, it adds more trauma to them as they lose faith in getting the required services from the people working there.
“Today we are painting the Community Service Centre so that it has a welcoming look and colour for people to feel safe when they enter the premises. Only through partnerships we can ensure a safe and secure environment for our communities to develop socially and economically. We thank the station commander for also joining us,” said Zulu.
Mpume Jobe from the Department of Community Safety and Liaison said she and her team were happy to be part of this initiative to give back to the Berea Police Station. “We are making the station presentable and user-friendly for all who will be coming in for various services available at the station,” said Jobe.
Captain Naidoo, Communications Officer for Berea SAPS, said the teams were also joined by students from I Can College who voluntarily clean the station on a regular basis and also volunteered to be part of the initiative. “We thank our sponsors, Prostar Paints, for the donation of accessories and paint.”
The Station Commander, Colonel MI Mngadi, said that he appreciates the effort made by the CPF, departments and students for giving the station a much-needed facelift.
