The students of the Butokukan Dojo recently had a tonfa training session with acclaimed Sensei Emile Janse Van Rensburg. Students were delighted at the training.

Tonfa is a traditional hand-held Okinawan weapon made of wood. It consists of a stick with a perpendicular handle attached a third of the way down the length of the stick. It is a martial arts weapon which is used for self-defence.

Students were treated to an array of techniques demonstrated by Sensei Emile, who is also a 22-year veteran of the Department of Correctional Services, a former MMA fighter and second Dan in Shorin Ryu Butokukan.

“We at Butokukan Newcastle are fortunate enough to have instructors with real life experience to share in our dojo. Sensei Emile really is a gifted instructor who also teaches new recruits at the DOC. How do we know that his techniques are top class? He is still alive,” said said Dojo instructor Frik Willemse.
