The frequent water outages, leaks and seepages in Phoenix resulted in a consultative meeting between the Democratic Liberal Congress (DLC) and water inspector, Edwin Govender from Metro Water.
DLC leader, Cllr Patrick Pillay, said: “Govender is willing to ensure that all water outages and leakages are sorted out timeously and people are not prejudiced from the loss of water because of the lengthy water repairs. During the past few months, the frequent burst water pipes caused by contractors laying fiber optic cables and criminals stealing water meters, have angered the community that sometimes went without water for days. While the DLC championed for these water repairs to be done timeously by Metro Water management, the working relationship we now have with the water inspector for the Phoenix area, Edwin Govender, will enhance and fast-track service delivery.” Govender said he wanted to build a working relationship with the community so that service delivery is enhanced and the turnaround time for repairs is quicker. “I am happy to have had this constructive meeting with Councillor Patrick Pillay and look forward to a great working relationship with him. Water is a very important commodity and it is paramount that we save water and attend to these repairs efficiently and effectively,” said Govender.
Pillay added: “The DLC has always been vocal about the state of the water affairs in the city and has consistently expressed this in Council meetings. The huge water losses have impacted ratepayers in terms of tariff increases.
