Gearing up for one of their most iconic annual fund raising activities, the Food for Life Africa’s Rice Drive is set to take place on Saturday, 24 September.
The non-profit organisation has successfully conducted this event for the past three years and keeps pushing the boundaries to provide food to those in need. With something for everyone, the event offers live music and ambient setting, in exchange for visitors contributing cash or bags of rice as a donation to the organisation’s drive. The Rice Drive will see participants meet at Blak on Meridian Drive in uMhlanga at 9am and once the convoy is stacked, the cars, bikes, vans, supercars and 4×4’s will head to River Range Ranch in Verulam. Organiser of the event, Lisa Sukdev said there is a possiblity of helicopters once again joining the convoy this year.
She said: “The venue is the head quarter of the organisation, an almost a hidden gem of KwaZulu-Natal. With a lake, cascading hills, open grass field shaded by trees, cows, ducks and pea cocks guaranteeing you a wonderful day.” Sukdev said the Rice Drive was the brain child of the late Theasen Pillay, who in 2020 helped collect 11 tons of rice as part of the initiative. “Last year, in honour of his legacy 22 tons of rice was collected. In two and a half years Food for Life Africa has served more than 8 750 000 plates of food to the hungry. With 12 kitchens already established in SA and the newest one opening in Nigeria, we are committed to one goal, eradicating hunger. We need 60 bags of rice and 150 litres of oil daily to feed 16 000 hungry people. It is efforts like these that enable us to continue the work we are so dedicated to,” said Sukdev. She said Team Westleigh has graciously sponsored the entertainment for the day and visitors will enjoy the Bollywood Fusion Band DJ Alan Chetty, Vocals and Saxophone by Kiran and many more.
