Tongaat and Verulam Tabloid (TVT): Please tell us a bit about yourself, who is Ashmeka Rajman?
Ashmeka Rajman (AR): Ashmeka Rajman is an ambitious young woman who is always striving to fulfil her goals through hard work, dedication and most of all, perseverance. On a lighter note, I would describe myself as an extremely outgoing, selfless individual who is also very friendly and outspoken.
TVT: Where did you grow up?
AR: I grew up in Ottawa, which is a small area located north of Durban.
TVT: How long have you been a beauty therapist and why have you chosen this career?
AR: My professional career as a beauty therapist started 14 years ago, when I graduated from Oval International after studying Beauty Technology. I have always enjoyed working and interacting with others. Beauty therapy is not just a career choice for me, I believe that it is my passion and probably my calling. My greatest satisfaction is knowing that I make others feel more self-assured and confident as well as promoting health awareness.
TVT: You currently run a business while fighting sarcoidosis. Please could you explain the condition and how you’re still able to run a business?
AR: I was diagnosed with sarcoidosis in my right eye in March 2014. Sarcoidosis is a rare medical condition that causes granulomas (tiny patches of inflamed tissues) to develop within the organs of the body. It is an autoimmune condition that is said to occur when a body’s immune system goes into an “overdrive” and starts to attack its own tissues and organs. The first few weeks following my diagnosis were extremely difficult, especially since I was taking Methotrexate (a drug commonly used for cancer treatment). However, I had a positive mindset and adjusted well to my lifestyle changes and my family, friends and loyal clients also encouraged and supported me.
TVT: What are some of your greatest personal achievements?
AR: Ten years ago, while working at a beauty spa, I decided to venture out and start my very own business. On 24 August 2012, my beauty parlour was established. This was the day that my dream became a reality. Today, I am proud to announce that my small business celebrates an extremely significant milestone, 10 successful years in business. This achievement has allowed me to become much more independent and learn new skills, such as tackling my own social media marketing in my free time.
TVT: Where do you draw your inspiration from?
AR: My inspiration comes from working at previous beauty spas and learning from other amazing and talented professionals. Also, I believe that my long-term goals inspire me to always work harder and be a better version of myself. Lastly, not forgetting my family who always inspires me to work more diligently with the utmost sincerity.
TVT: Who are your role models and how do they inspire you?
AR: I consider two strong and powerful women as my role models, Oprah and J.K. Rowling. These ladies started from the bottom, believed in themselves, and never allowed self-doubt and adversities to wither their dreams. In my opinion, Oprah and J.K. Rowling are both the epitome of ambition, success and are proof that with a positive mindset, anything is possible.
TVT: Women, especially in this country are raped and murdered everyday. They aren’t given much opportunity and are seen as inferior to men. What is your message to young women growing up in South Africa?
AR: Being a woman in society is never an easy task. Despite being a beautician, I believe that all females are so much more than just a pretty face or body. I believe that a female is a tower of strength and dignity, a bonfire of knowledge and a creator of life. My message to all women out there is to conquer your fears, be brave, find your inner strength and self-confidence and always stand for what is right.
TVT: Everyone takes some personal time to relax and do what they love. What do you do in your down time?
AR: I am a major epicure, so in my free time I love to try different restaurants and cafes. I cannot say no to a slice of cake and a good cappuccino. I also enjoy long walks on the beach. I find it extremely relaxing to pause, take in the fresh air and just reflect on life.
TVT: Which is a place you’ve always wanted to visit and what would you like to do there?
AR: India. I have always been a very spiritual individual who embraced Hinduism. Therefore, visiting India is on my bucket list as I would love to visit all the temples, especially the Shridi Sai Baba Ashram.
TVT: What are some of your favourite movies?
AR: I am a big fan of Marvel and Fast and Furious, as I am a lover of cars. I also enjoy watching Bollywood movies that deliver a message, such as Sultan and Manikarnika which portrays believing in yourself and to never give up. Also, Baghban, as it is a movie that is close to my heart because it illustrates the value of family.
TVT: Lastly, if you could have any superpower what would it be and why?
AR: If I had a superpower, it would definitely be one that could help and heal all those who are battling with an illness or suffering from grief and trauma.
