The disgruntled residents of Crossmoor are up in arms and urge authorities to sanction thorough repairs after work by a fibre service provider team allegedly caused massive damage to the road.
According to a resident of Dandelion Road, Rishi Chuttergoon, the team cracked an underground water pipe which ultimately caused it to burst, under-washing the road. “Metro water did come through and closed off the valve with repairs being done but it was not properly covered and sealed. Due to the pressure of motorists frequenting the road, it created a crater of sorts and while residents have tried to cover it up with sand from the corners of the road, it is still not safe.” Chuttergoon said while the area has been demarcated for work to begin, there is no other sign of work being done yet. “We see the marking for work to begin but this has not materialised yet. We also hope that this repair will not just be on the surface because the whole road was affected by the under-wash. Repairs need to be done thoroughly,” he said.
Community Activist and IFP Area Manager of Chatsworth, Pastor Selvan Govender, was also called upon to escalate and address this matter. He said: “This situation was a major safety hazard for motorists taking into consideration the bad weather that we have been experiencing and the poor lighting at night. There are no barricades and the affected area is not cordoned off which shows the total disregard for residents and motorists.” The eThekwini Municipality was yet to comment at the time of print.
