Basil and Lorraine Regina Dorasamy from Foresthaven are strong believers that the recipe for a long-lasting marriage is a mixture of love, care, and support of one another which is what has them together in wedded bliss for 50 years as they prepare to celebrate their golden anniversary on 10 August.
Basil, 74, and Lorraine, 70, met at the Eden Temple Church in Marianhill and started courting in 1972. The couple said they had an unforgettable wedding at the Pinetown Moodie Hall on 10 August 1974.
“There were approximately 400 guests at our wedding. It was a blessed wedding, and we were surrounded by our loving families and friends. The officiating minister was the late Pastor JF Rowlands and our menu consisted of delicious mutton biryani, served with salad and soji. We were dressed in our finest wedding attire,” said the Dorasamys.
The bride was dressed in a stunning white gown and veil while the groom had on a stunning blue suit. “We thereafter visited the Japanese Garden for a photo shoot,” added the Dorasamys.
Basil described his wife as humble, kind, and a praying woman, and said they enjoy spending time with each other doing gardening, baking, and spending time in God’s presence.
“Lorraine is beautiful, kind, and a loving wife. We have three wonderful children together, Luke Collins, Bernadena Clair, and Morgan Rogers. We have been blessed with five amazing grandchildren namely, Michaela, Chanelle, Joshua, Isabella, and Zachary,” said Basil.
Lorraine described Basil as a generous, helpful, and joyful person. “My amazing husband is very kind, compassionate, helpful, and always a jokester. He also loves singing to me. One of the funniest moments we have experienced in recent times; after our shopping adventures we seem to try and enter cars that look like ours, because of the colour. It’s quite amusing, most often we have a good laugh about it,” she added.
The couple’s advice for a long-lasting marriage to the younger generation is “to always put God first”. “When you are in a relationship or marriage you have to be honest with each other. Remember to also apologise quickly and always remind each other of your love for them,” said the Dorasamys.
