Today (Friday, 12 March), the country mourns the death of the Zulu Monarch, King Goodwill Zwelithini ka Bhekuzulu, the King of the Zulu nation.
It is believed that the King was admitted for diabetes treatment “after several unstable glucose readings” and ended up in ICU, a month ago. The King died this morning.
Last week, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) founder and traditional prime minister to the Zulu monarch, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, said His Majesty was progressing in hospital, and this morning he confirmed in a statement that the King is no more.
“It is with the utmost grief that I inform the nation of the passing of His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini ka Bhekuzulu, King of the Zulu Nation. Tragically, while still in hospital, His Majesty’s health took a turn for the worse and he subsequently passed away in the early hours of this morning,” said Buthelezi.
He said that the Royal Family would like to thank the nation for the continued prayers and support in this most difficult time.
“May His Majesty our King rest in peace,” read the statement.
