Maths is taking centre stage at Fairhaven Primary School in Bayview ahead of World Mathematics Day on Saturday, 14 March, where pupils are already proving that when it comes to numbers, problem-solving and innovation, the possibilities truly add up.

In preparation for the global celebration of mathematics, the school has been introducing pupils to the concept of STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – fields that are considered scarce and critical skills in South Africa. By exposing pupils to these disciplines at a young age, the school aims to spark curiosity, build analytical thinking and encourage future innovators.

As part of the activities, pupils are using a robot mouse to explore problem-solving equations in an engaging and interactive way. The task requires the robot mouse to navigate its way through a series of obstacles in order to reach its food – a piece of cheese.

Through mathematics and critical thinking, pupils work out the correct sequence of moves to guide the robot mouse successfully through the course. The exercise encourages logical thinking while allowing pupils to apply mathematical reasoning as they calculate the best path forward.

Mathematics teacher Mrs O Pillay and robotics teacher Mr C J Singh work hand in hand to guide pupils through the activity, combining their expertise to bring the STEM concept to life in the classroom.

The initiative highlights how mathematics and technology can multiply learning opportunities while helping pupils develop valuable skills for the future in an increasingly technology-driven world.
