Meals on Wheels Community Services South Africa (MOWCS SA) joins the global community in celebrating World Food Day, reaffirming its commitment to eradicating hunger and promoting food security in South Africa.
As a registered Non-Profit Organisation (NPO), MOWCS SA operates a vast network of six area offices and 180 community kitchens across the country, delivering daily meals to vulnerable individuals through 240 delivery vehicles. In the past year, they have served over 31 million meals nationwide.
However, with unemployment at 27% and 14 million people facing daily hunger, MOWCS SA recognizes the immense challenges ahead. To address this, they have expanded their approach beyond meal delivery, focusing on skills development and poverty alleviation.
Since 2017, MOWCS SA has upskilled beneficiaries in areas such as backyard gardening, confectionery, food preservation, and body product manufacturing. This has enabled individuals to produce their own food and establish cooperatives. Recently, over 300 beneficiaries have received training, resulting in the establishment of two successful cooperatives.
To commemorate World Food Day 2024, MOWCS SA will showcase the skills development and success stories of these cooperatives, as well as introduce their new hydroponics tunnels aimed at promoting smart farming and agriculture innovation.
MOWCS SA calls on the public, businesses, and government bodies to unite in the fight against hunger, supporting sustainable solutions through food security initiatives and community-driven programs.
