Woodview Flea Market, which aims to provide assistance to families suffering as result of lost employment, has been hailed a huge success following their grand opening on 6 August.

The flea market, which is situated at Woodview Secondary School, had 54 vendor stalls on opening day and drew in crowds, securing a new source of income for many Phoenix residents.

Woodview Flea Market chairperson, Maga Chelin, who is also the chairperson for Mereridge Flea Market in Merebank, said the idea of opening a flea market in Woodview was that of “a vibrant young woman”, Michelle Padayachee.

He said: “Michelle Padayachee is a resident of Woodview, who has travelled and worked abroad for more than 10 years. She has a home-based sewing business and has dedicated her time towards helping the community of Phoenix build their own home businesses.”

Chelin said this initiative is aimed at helping those who lost their jobs and livelihoods during the Covid-19 pandemic and the looting that occurred during the July 2021 civil unrest. He said in a matter of three weeks, Padayachee has been able make her idea, a reality.

“We have a well-equipped team at the Woodview Flea market, which consists of the founder and organiser, Michelle Padayachee, her father and treasurer, Selvan Padayachee and her mother, Beena Padayachee, who assists with the administrative work and myself, in which ever capacity that I am needed,” said Chelin.

The Woodview Flea Market is opened every Saturday at Woodview Secondary School (320 Viewhaven Drive), from 10am to 4pm.
