The Women’s Day celebrations organised by stallholders at the Phoenix Millennium Market attracted hundreds of women who gathered to enjoy the fun activities, music, entertainment and a sumptuous lunch which was held in their honour.
Democratic Liberal Congress (DLC) leader, Councillor Patrick Pillay was the guest speaker at the event and gave an inspiring address to motivate and empower all the women in attendance. In his speech, the DLC leader applauded all women for their powerful strength and ability to persevere against all odds.
He said: “Women must never despair and exercise their rights accordingly in terms of our constitution.”
Cllr Pillay said the DLC would like to see more women in managerial and leadership positions in government and the private sector. “Women are the powerhouse and the heartbeat of our democracy and deserve their rightful place in society,” added Cllr Pillay.
On the second pandemic that continues to plague south African, Cllr Pillay said the party condemns perpetrators of gender-based violence (GBV) with the contempt it deserves. “The scourge of gender-based violence is destroying everything that we, as a country are trying to achieve. Women must be protected at all cost and the state security agencies and the justice department must ensure that these perpetrators are brought to book and jailed,” Cllr Pillay.
He also extended his gratitude to Tony Amichand, Mr S Singh, Mr and Mrs Naidoo, Renisha Bridgelall, Ashin Harichand and Neshanie Singh who made the event a great success. Mr S Singh of the Millennium Market said that the Women’s Day event was amazing.
“We served hundreds of women in attendance and provided gifts and others goodies to them. We had this event for the women because they are strength and the backbone of society. Our team of organisers and sponsors did very well in bringing this great event to our local women,” he added.
