The wife of a Shallcross father who was allegedly shot nine times says her family’s nightmare is far from over as her husband continues to fight for his life in hospital while two of the accused remain behind bars.

On Wednesday, 17 June, the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court denied bail to accused number one, Kasan Naidoo, and accused number two, Thayralo Naidoo, who face charges linked to the attempted murder of 43-year-old Muhammad Abdul Kadir.

The matter has been postponed to Wednesday, 24 June. Three co-accused were previously granted bail of R2 000 each.

Speaking to the Merebank and Chatsworth Tabloid, Aakifa Kadir said she continues to live in fear but is relieved that the court opposed bail for the two accused.

“I am trying to be strong for my children, but it is very difficult. Every day is filled with uncertainty and fear. We still do not feel safe, but I am grateful that the accused were arrested and that bail was denied. I just hope justice takes its course,” she said.
While the legal proceedings continue, the family’s focus remains on Muhammad’s deteriorating health.

Aakifa said her husband has now been transferred to King Edward VIII Hospital for specialist treatment after suffering severe facial injuries during the shooting.

“His condition is not good. He has been transferred to King Edward for his face. He cannot feel the left side of his face and his jaw is out of place. There are also still bullets lodged in his left hand,” she said.

The father of four was allegedly ambushed outside his flat in Alpine Drive, Shallcross, on 31 May. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his head, chest, arms and legs during the attack.

The shooting shocked the community, with residents alleging that Kadir had been vocal about suspected drug activity in the area before he was targeted.

According to Chatsworth SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Thenjiswa Ngcobo, police are continuing their investigation.

“Police in Chatsworth are investigating a case of attempted murder following an incident in which a 45-year-old man was allegedly shot by unknown suspects on Alpine Drive on 31 May. The victim was conveyed to a nearby hospital for medical attention,” she said.

Aakifa said despite the trauma, she remains hopeful that those responsible will be held accountable: “My husband is still fighting for his life. We are taking it one day at a time and praying that he recovers. All we want is justice.”
