Upgrades to the iconic and much beloved uMhlanga Whalebone Pier are well underway with the completion date scheduled for November this year, according to the eThekwini Municipality.
“The beloved Whalebone Pier in uMhlanga will be undergoing a remarkable transformation that will rejuvenate this iconic spot and make it even more enchanting than before. Plans encompass a range of enhancements that will ensure the pier’s longevity and enhance its beauty,” said Ward 35 Councillor, Nicole Bollman.
She said some of these enhancements will include reinforcement and restoration, breathing new life into the pier by addressing the wear and tear due to the elements causing erosion. The spalling concrete will be reinstated and a product by the name of Penetron will be applied, ensuring a solid foundation for generations to come.
“The deck and abutment wall are getting a fresh coat of paint, along with much-needed repair work. This makeover will not only add to the pier’s aesthetics but also guarantee a safe welcoming environment for all visitors,” said Cllr Bollman.
She added that the pier will also see enhancements in lighting, ensuring mesmerising evening walks for residents and visitors who can also enjoy taking in the artistry of the revived mosaic art upon completion.
UMhlanga UIP Precinct Manager, Dewet Geldenhuys said that they welcome the refurbishment of the iconic Whalebone Pier and has urged residents to be patient while work gets underway.
“As a tourist destination and an enchanting spot to drink a morning coffee, the Whalebone Pier has become synonymous with uMhlanga Rocks. With completion expected by the end of November 2023, passersby can expect to see a range of reinforcement and restoration, upgrades to lighting and the revival of the mosaic artwork. We ask everyone to please bear with the private contractors as they work through a step-by-step process to ensure the project is set for its completion date. The uMhlanga UIP has provided the contractors with additional support by providing a walkway bridge and security around the pier 24/7, while the it is being repaired. The necessary traffic control is also dealt with by UIP to prevent congestion,” he added.
