Jemimah Elise Sampson, a Grade 4 learner at Whetstone Primary School, emerged as KZN’s Last Kid Standing out of 900 entries in the East Coast Radio Spelling Bee Competition.

The competition was viewed by thousands as they witnessed Sampson win the number one spot in the grand finale. Enduring nail-biting moments, the principal, SGB, staff and learners of Whetstone Primary School were elated as Sampson scooped victory with the word  ‘personification.’ Principal, Mrs V Pillay, said Jemimah is an outstanding learner who has achieved many accolades both in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. “Her love for reading has culminated in her excellence in spelling. We as a public school are beaming with excitement, as this sends out a clear message that learners are born with the ability to be successful irrespective of wherever you hail from,” said Pillay. The principal, staff, SGB and learners honoured Sampson at a special assembly, celebrating her victory. Her prizes from ECR have been numerous but a special thanks to Starwood Super Spar for recognising the Last Kid Standing winner by gifting Sampson with hampers of stationery and goodies as well as a series of books to acknowledge the honour Sampson has brought to the community of Phoenix.
