The Ward 26 ANC Committee commemorated Freedom Day with a focused community outreach initiative at South Beach, combining a clean-up campaign with direct engagement and support for the homeless.
In partnership with the Siphilisiwe Community Project, volunteers swept and cleaned streets in areas surrounding local shelters, helping to restore dignity to a space frequently used by some of the city’s most vulnerable residents.
The programme extended beyond cleaning. Volunteers engaged with individuals living in and around the shelters, many of whom shared feelings of neglect and exclusion from the broader community. Through these interactions, organisers identified key challenges faced by the homeless, including the lack of identity documents, limited access to food, and high levels of unemployment.

As part of the initiative, lunch was served to those in the shelters, providing immediate relief while reinforcing the day’s message of inclusion and care.
Organisers said the initiative was a practical reflection on the meaning of Freedom Day, emphasising that dignity, access to basic services, and a sense of belonging remain out of reach for many.
