A brazen daylight shooting in the heart of Overport left two people dead on Sunday, with shaken residents now suggesting the attack may have been a targeted hit and calling for urgent, intensified policing in the area.

The incident unfolded at the corner of Crescent and East streets near a park off Ridge Road, a space typically frequented by families and children. Gunfire erupted shortly after 1:30pm, sending people fleeing for cover as panic spread through the neighbourhood.

Paramedics arrived to find one man fatally wounded at the scene. A second victim, who had been transported to hospital in critical condition, later succumbed to his injuries.

Forensic teams recovered multiple spent cartridges, pointing to a sustained and deliberate attack. A passing motorist’s vehicle was also struck by stray bullets, highlighting the indiscriminate danger posed to bystanders.

While the motive remains unconfirmed, residents and community stakeholders believe the nature of the shooting suggests it could have been a hit. Concerns have been raised over increasing levels of organised crime in the area, with locals warning that such violence is becoming more frequent and brazen.

The Overport Ratepayers Association (ORA) strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a stark reflection of escalating crime.

“This incident is totally unacceptable. A public park should be a safe space for families, children, and residents, not a site of violence and criminal activity,” said chairperson Abdool Valodia.

Residents are now urging law enforcement agencies to step up visibility and act decisively. Calls have been made for sustained police presence, targeted operations against criminal elements, and a thorough investigation into whether the shooting was indeed a premeditated hit.

The ORA also pointed to broader contributing factors, including ongoing gang-related activity, drug dealing, and the presence of vagrancy and illegal operations in public spaces.

“These issues continue to fuel crime in our area, creating an environment of fear and lawlessness,” Valodia added.

South African Police Service officers cordoned off the scene as investigations commenced. The Sydenham SAPS have been approached for comment regarding any arrests and to confirm whether authorities are treating the case as a targeted hit. At the time of publication, no official confirmation had been provided.

The ORA has called on SAPS, Metro Police and the municipality to implement stronger enforcement measures, including increased patrols, crackdowns on illegal activity, and improved management of public spaces.

For many in Overport, the shooting is a chilling indication that violent crime is no longer a distant threat but an immediate and pressing reality.
