Following three months of intensive building renovations, The Domino Foundation’s Babies’ Home has been transformed from a facility affected by damp, borer and the wear of time into a bright, comfortable and modern space. While the building emerged renewed, the gardens surrounding the home had inevitably suffered during the construction process and were in need of urgent attention to match the upgraded structure that provides a safe haven for six babies, toddlers and their carers.
Stepping in to make a difference was uMhlanga-based company Custom Capital. Director Pierre du Toit explained that the organisation was eager to assist both financially and through hands-on involvement. He said: “We heard that the gardens needed to be redone and were keen to get involved. We engaged Ladybird Landscapes for their expertise, and Custom Capital covered the entire cost of the project.”

His brother and fellow director, Chris du Toit, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the value of practical contribution. “What better way to make a difference in the lives of these little people than quite literally getting our hands dirty to get the job done?” he said.
With three decades of horticultural experience, Ladybird Landscapes led the garden transformation, arriving with a trailer-load of compost, jasmine, tickey creeper, spekboom, and dietes, as well as shovels and rakes. Their team guided Custom Capital’s enthusiastic volunteers through the process of preparing the soil, composting and planting new herbaceous borders before giving the garden a thorough watering.
Despite the hard work under Durban’s summer heat and humidity, the day was marked by high spirits, teamwork and a strong sense of community. Good humour and shared purpose proved to be the key ingredients in an initiative that brought new life to the gardens and renewed joy to the space surrounding the Babies’ Home.
