Traffic along the N3, heading towards Harrismith is being turned around by Free State Police, after violent protests erupted outside Harrismith on Monday morning, 24 May.

Stones were thrown at Police vehicles and motorists have been advised to seek alternative routes. The protests is part of a shut down, which was called by the Harrismith community, due to their dissatisfaction with service delivery. The community are demanding that service delivery is met or they will continue with an illegal shut down of the Harrismith town and surrounding areas. Residents claim that they endure power and water outages daily. They say that they are fed up with the illegal dumping and potholes. Serious allegations are also being made against the municipality regarding misuse of funds and corruption.
