The Wentworth Victim Friendly Centre recently received a generous donation of blankets, educational literature and shoes from various educational institutes around Durban.
Some of the people who were at the forefront of the initiative include Interact facilitators from Eden College, Phyllis Walsh, Miss Lee Gerber, President of Interact from Arnav Dasrath and his committee. The great spirit of giving by those who were involved was drawn from the Nelson Mandela Day initiative which enabled the team to touch many lives and make a difference in community. Dasrath partnered with two Durban based schools, Maris Stella and Crawford La Lucia to enhance this initiative that involved gathering blankets and knitting squares to be donate to the needy. Over 100 blankets were collected at the end of the collaboration. “As part of this movement a ‘Pass it forward’ shoe drive and book collection was held to gather second hand shoes from Erica Primary and Eden College. The community of Chatsworth contributed by handing over books.
The bulk of these offerings were handed over to the Centre Manager of Wentworth Victim Friendly Centre, Jennifer Gomes and Trauma Counsellor, Wendy Augustine. Brighton Beach SAPS communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux said,“The donations will be beneficial to the centre as it primarily operates with handouts from volunteers.”
