Emergency rescue services attend to the drowning at the lagoon

Durban Central SAPS have opened an inquest docket after the body of an Indian male, approximately in his 50s, was washed up on the Suncoast beach last week.

Durban Central SAPS communications officer, Captain Muzi Maphumulo, confirmed that an investigation was underway. “The body of the Indian male, age 50, was found lifeless at the Suncoast beach. It is suspected that the cause of death was drowning, however, the Durban Central SAPS are investigating an inquest docket in relation to the incident.” Meanwhile, on Wednesday afternoon, Emer-G-Med Paramedics spokesperson, Kyle Van Reenen, said paramedics and Metro Police Search and Rescue Units together  responded to the Umgeni River mouth in the vicinity of the Blue Lagoon area for reports of a drowning. “Upon arrival on scene, lifeguards were found to be attending to a male believed to be approximately 35 years of age. After extensive assessment, the man was found to be obviously deceased and there was nothing further paramedics could do to assist him, he was declared dead on arrival,” said Van Reenen. He said it’s believed that the man was attempting to cross the lagoon when he got into difficulties and drowned, however, the necessary investigations will be conducted.
