
Wentworth police are investigated a case of robbery after two boys aged were arrested for allegedly robbing a women at knife-point in Merebank recently.
Communications officer of Wentworth SAPS, Captain Mbuso Gumede said that on Friday, 12 August at about 12:20pm, a 33-year-old woman who was with her toddler was robbed at knife-point.
“While she was busy attending to a call from her husband, she noticed two young boys walking past her. She said that after she finished attending to her call, she continued walking while carrying her daughter. Suddenly the two boys turned back and approached her. One pulled out a knife and held it in his hand while demanding her cellphone and threatened to stab her. The other male suspect grabbed the cellphone from her hand. Both suspects ran down towards Juggernaut road,” said Cpt Gumede.
He added that the complainant started screaming for assistance while both suspects ran in the same direction.
“Three African men then went to assist her, and chased after the suspects. They apprehended one suspect and he was found in possession of the complainant’s cellphone. The second suspect was also apprehended by two security officers of Alpha Alarms Security company. The suspect was found in possession of a knife. The complainant positively identified both suspects with the same clothing they were wearing. The complainant’s cellphone was recovered,” said Cpt Gumede.
Wentworth SAPS Vispol members were called and both suspects were handed over to them. “A case of robbery was opened at the station and the suspects were detained. Station commander, Colonel SP Mtshali commended the two security officers and three community members for their quick assistance in apprehending the suspects and recovering the stolen cellphone,” he said.
Col Mtshali is encouraging the community to assist police in fighting crime by reporting any suspicious activities taking place in the community. He also appealed to residents to report criminal activities to their Community Police Forum structures which work with police in the fight against crime.
