A man found trespassing and trying to steal a bar-light from a security car was apprehended by the community and a private security company, whilst two alleged accomplices managed to evade arrest, in Overport, on Monday.
The man, believed to be in his late 30s was found in a holding yard for damaged cars on Crescent Street, Overport where he was noticed by the owner and manager of Roadstar Security.
Floyd Doorsamy, manager of Roadstar Security said: “Through the gates we saw someone. When he noticed us he ran to the other side and jumped on a bakkie to go over the wall. Before he could jump he saw me and tried to evade us by running on the walls. We called for back-up and our security company while a few community members gathered on Chapel Street.”
He said the suspect climbed onto a neighbour’s roof and refused to get down. “He was armed with a knife and our team then went up to apprehend him. When they brought him down the community began assaulting him. That’s when our team had to intervene. When we brought him back to the yard we bound his legs with cable ties and waited for the police to arrive,” he said.
Doorsamy said two other suspects were in the yard but managed to evade arrest. One of the men that got away was seen with a firearm. “This is not the first time someone got into the yard. There are footprints all along these walls,” said Doorsamy.
