Women’s Day marks the anniversary of the great women’s march on 9 August 1956, where over 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against legislation aimed at tightening the apartheid government’s control over the movement of black women in urban areas.
Many decades on, the women of South Africa are working towards the betterment of their communities and country through organisations like the Tongaat Women’s Association.

The Tongaat Women’s Association provides much-needed support to abused women and families in need. Some of their services include providing oxygen tanks, wheelchairs, and other essential items, to those who cannot purchase them.
Martha Soobramoney, chairperson of the Tongaat Women’s Association, said: “We are committed to providing a safe space for women and their families where they can receive aid, encouragement and support. We believe that every woman, no matter her background, deserves to live with dignity and respect and it is our mission to make this a reality. Together we can make a difference in the lives of others and create a brighter future.”
In honour of the women that fought for our freedom and rights, the Tongaat and Verulam Tabloid would like to wish all our readers and advertisers a Happy Women’s Day on Friday, 9 August.
