The Woodhurst Library in Chatsworth is on a mission of becoming Santa’s little helpers through their toy drive which they hope will bring joy and smiles to a number of children from a local orphanage this Christmas.

Woodhurst Librarian, Noma Ngcobo, said that as parents will be flocking to shops to buy nice toys for their little ones, they do this because they understand that playing is crucial in the development of a child.

She said: “According to Dana Villamagna, a magazine writer: ‘Kids build skills naturally through play. They practise cognitive, emotional and social skills such as creative thinking, verbal and non-verbal communication, spatial and body awareness, empathy, adaptability, choice-making and more. However, only kids with parents who can afford to buy them such toys can reap the benefits.” Ngcobo added that in reality, there are lots of kids who would love to have a toy for Christmas but simply cannot due to the fact that their parents cannot afford to buy toys or due to the fact that kids are orphaned.

“With that motivation, please join Woodhurst Library by donating a used or new toy for a child in need under the theme ‘Tis a season to donate a toy’. Toys will be given to a local orphanage in Chatsworth so that we can put a smile on a child’s face,” she said. Collection will run from 20 November to 15 December and toys will be handed over to kids on 17 December. All Covid-19 precautions will be followed and toys will be put in isolation for a recommended period before hand-over.
