Alfred Duma Local Municipality officials led by ExCo member, Councillor Thobani Dlamini, recently met with Mtho Khoza of Niphile Construction regarding the progress being made at the Ladysmith Indoor Sports Centre.
The sports centre, which is under construction, will not only boast a grandstand able to accommodate 5 000 people but is also undergoing construction to become a multi-sporting facility which will include indoor and outdoor gym facilities, a dance studio, a pool and state-of-the-art athletics tracks.
From rugby to beach volleyball, the sports centre’s new look is set to bring sports and local athletes onto Ladysmith’s centre stage. The construction continues in multiple phases with phases four and five already underway. It is reported that over R200 million has been spent on the sports centre’s upgrades.
“As money is made available from the various departments, which include the Department of Sports and Recreation, so will the phases continue. So the bill for the upgrade will be much more once it has all been completed,” said Khoza.
Excitement over the new project was clearly seen among the officials upon their visit to the site. “This will be one of Ladysmith’s biggest sporting draw cards and what a beautiful dream this will be when it is done,” said officials.
Cllr Dlamini also asked that the Ladysmith community assist and support this project by making sure that all rates, taxes and bills are paid, “because without it, community projects like these will otherwise not be possible.”
The indoor sports centre will be linked to Settlers Park, which will also receive a much-needed upgrade. “It will be like a sporting hub for athletes to safely move and park.”
