Mother’s Day turned into a nightmare for a disabled single mother whose house was broken into on Sunday, 9 May.
Speaking to The Phoenix Tabloid, Rakasha Dwarika, 43, and her son Vikesh, 21, said they were attending church when their house in Unit 9 was broken into. “The alarm activated when the break-in occurred and officials from a local security company appeared at the house. The security officials tried to contact us but our phones were switched off as we were enjoying the church service. We saw the messages when the church service was over, and we immediately rushed home,” said Rakasha. Rakasha claimed that thieves gained access to the house by cutting the window pane and breaking the burglar guard at the front of the house. “They stole gold jewellery (mangalsutra, rings and chains) that my deceased mother left me. The jewellery was kept in a locked cupboard. They stole all my clothes from my wardrobe and also stole my curtains. “I had groceries stored in the spare room as my kitchen cupboards are broken. The thieves stole all our food and groceries that I had purchased for the month. They also took my son’s amp and speakers and removed small furniture items, including my washing line,” she said.
Phoenix SAPS communications officer, Captain L Naidoo, confirmed the incident and said police are investigating a case of housebreaking. The family are vulnerable and have now been left destitute. Rakasha said she collects a disability grant and Vikesh, who was a learner at AM Moolla Spes Nova School, does odd jobs in the community to supplement the family income, like cutting grass, cleaning yards etc. She would appreciate any assistance from the community to help them recover from the break-in.
