The safety of children on the roadway is once again being questioned after a ten-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle at the corner of JG Champion and Shastri Park Drive in Phoenix on Saturday.

Passing motorists who witnessed the accident contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) for immediate medical assistance.

RUSA spokesperson, Prem Balram, confirmed the details of the collision.

The boy was treated on scene and transported to hospital

He said: “It is alleged that a motorist observed approximately 10 children playing on or near the roadway. A 10-year-old boy suddenly fled across the road in front of the vehicle. The driver was unable to avoid the collision and struck the child. The motorist lost control and the vehicle left the roadway before coming to a stop on a grass verge.”

Paramedics from a private ambulance service arrived promptly to treat and stabilise the minor before transporting him to a nearby hospital. It was confirmed that the driver of the vehicle did not sustain any physical injuries.

Balram emphasised that the incident underscores a critical gap in community awareness regarding traffic regulations.

He added: “This type of incident highlights the issue that children are not properly educated on road safety rules. Parents and educators need to impress the importance of obeying the rules of the road to minors for their own safety. Too many little lives are lost when road safety is flouted.”
