The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has announced a temporary nighttime closure of the N2 northbound carriageway between the KwaMashu and Mount Edgecombe interchanges to allow for the installation of two overhead sign gantries spanning the N2.
According to Jason Lowe, SANRAL’s KZN Provincial Specialist Geometrics Engineer, “Construction is at an advanced stage on the N2 and now requires the installation of road sign gantries. This closure forms part of the ongoing upgrade of the N2 between KwaMashu and uMdloti.”
The affected section is on the N2 Northbound Carriageway, from Durban towards King Shaka International Airport,, from Saturday, 12 July at 7pm to Sunday, 13 July, am Lowe urged motorists to note that the fast lane of the southbound carriageway will also be closed during this period to provide a safe working environment for the construction team.

“For the safety of both motorists and workers, comprehensive traffic accommodation plans have been put in place. Road users travelling through this section will notice additional signage, barriers, and traffic calming measures being installed in preparation for the work.
“Motorists are advised to plan ahead and make use of alternative routes, which have been clearly signposted. SANRAL has also urged road users to consider departing earlier than usual to avoid delays. Operators of heavy vehicles and trucks are encouraged to delay travel during the closure or use appropriate staging areas to prevent congestion. Public transport providers are requested to inform their drivers in advance.”
He empasised that SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks the public for their patience and cooperation as it continues to upgrade and improve South Africa’s national road network.
