Sharné Dheochand will be spreading love and light this Christmas

Since Covid-19 seems to be staying for Christmas again this year, everyone could use some extra cheer.

While the global pandemic, this time the Omicron variant, can be limiting, there are still ways to spread some love and light. Newcastle resident Sharné Dheochand is getting that exact message across to the community.

Christmas is the birth of a new tradition and people are encouraged to “think twice” before buying something of no real value. Kristen Joubert, a gift maker says that many are in need of something a little different this festive season, especially as the economic grind bites harder than ever. “It’s time to think out of the box when it comes to gifts, many have felt the impact of the pandemic so why not do something different? Everyone gets their hair cut, so why not gift a certificate from your local salon?” said Joubert.

Some of her other suggestions for gifts include:

  • A gym membership. It is appropriate for all ages for those who are thinking about some health improvements.
  • Who wouldn’t mind getting their car washed? Support your small carwash and book someone a valet.
  • Feel like going a bit over the top? What about a half a dozen breakfasts at a small restaurant or café?
  • Need something more personal? Local crafts people are great. They make jewellery, pottery, paintings and more.“Christmas is no longer about big gifts but rather about caring and encouraging small businesses to keep going,” she said. Joubert added: “Charity begins at home, and if you have a struggling family member, why not gift them their children’s school stationary list or a pair of school shoes. Many are facing tough times so think just a bit out of the box for gift ideas this year.”
