Loved by thousands across Durban, tributes poured in following the passing of Skabenga, the cat. Skabenga comes from the isiZulu term which means ‘criminal or thug’ – stole the hearts of patrons and visitors alike. He died on 12 March, at the age of 19.
Hotel manager, Ashwin Jose, said: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Skabenga, who peacefully crossed the rainbow bridge last night. “For more years than anyone can remember, Skabenga has ruled The Oyster Box. It seems ironic that a cat whose name means ‘hooligan or vagabond’ when translated from isiZulu, was actually VIP Guest numero uno at one of the world’s leading hotels. Skabenga was a legend in his own right.”

Jose said Skabenga, a Tabby cat, began his long residency at The Oyster Box 16 years ago, when he wandered onto the property as a stray. Additionally, he was fed tasty, expensive titbits by diners and treated as a king by the staff. “Skabenga knew The Oyster Box better than anybody else in the world. Every nook and cranny, from the kitchen to the presidential suite. Every famous guest that has ever visited and every special occasion that has ever been celebrated over the years, he was a part of. He was adored by all and many arrived bearing gifts for Skabenga, knowing that they would get the chance to give him a rub or grab a selfie with him. Although not a naturally gregarious cat, he did love the attention and lapped up all the little extras that came along with fame,” Jose said.
“Skabenga left paw prints on countless hearts. His spirit will forever be part of The Oyster
Box story. But for now, Rest in peace, dear Skabenga. You were truly one of a kind,” Jose concluded.
Following his death, thousands of tributes poured onto social media. Bronwen Amman said: “Rest easy handsome boy. I loved following your adventures. You were so loved.”
Brenda Penny said: “What a sad day for all at the Oyster Box. Skabenga made a huge cat imprint on the heart of everyone that was blessed to meet him. What a legend with such a wonderful personality, he will be hugely missed. Darling Skabenga, roam free with rainbow purrs. Until we all meet again.”
Jo-Anne Jennings said: Rest in Peace Skabenga. The Oyster Box will never be the same as you were just such a presence. Will miss your nudges on arrival. One in a million you were.”
