The little ones of ML Sultan Primary School were in high spirits recently as they celebrated and honoured Nelson Mandela and his contributions to mankind.
Learners from grades 1, 2 and 3 took Wednesday morning, 28 July, to commemorate Madiba. “We were kind of robbed of the Mandela magic that we as a school celebrate each year, but the Covid-19 lockdown regulations and the civil unrest made this a little difficult,” said Principal Donna Iyer. Iyer added that the continued sad news being reported did not have any negative effects on ML Sultan’s small celebrations by the junior phase kiddies. “Ma’am this must be the best day of my life,” said one of the learners involved in the Mandela Month celebrations held at the school. An educational talk was held about the work done by Nelson Mandela and the learners spent 67 minutes to beautify their school by planting seedlings and aloe plants within the school premises. Learners also got to sing “happy birthday” and the South African national anthem before cutting the cake with their principal. “I hope that my learners learn that Mandela was an incredible man and that even in our darkest days like these past few days, people must always remember to be kind to one another. And remember Madiba’s wise words – that no one is born hating another because of the colour of their skin, their background or religion. If people can learn to hate, they can be taught to love. Love comes more naturally to the heart than its opposite.”
