RUSA officers at the scene of the murder

A security guard working at a block manufacturing business in Verulam was found murdered, bound and gagged following a robbery the previous night.

An employee who opened the business on Friday morning, 16 April, found the victim lying in a prone position near the change rooms. It is alleged that the night-guard’s ankles and knees were bound with pieces of material cut from overalls and his hands were tied behind his back. An overall coat was used to gag him. Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) spokesperson, Prem Balram, said, “The employee contacted RUSA requesting medical assistance for the security officer. Reaction officers and RUSA paramedics were dispatched to the scene and on arrival found that the man had been strangled and assaulted. He was pronounced deceased”. The motive for the murder is believed to be robbery as batteries from two Hysters and cables from a welding machine were stolen. SAPS Verulam spokesperson, Captain Henry Kisten, said no arrests have been made as yet. “A case of murder was opened at the Verulam Police Station and is currently under investigation.”
