A routine police operation led to two significant arrests and the seizure of drugs and counterfeit alcohol in Greenwood Park last week.

On Thursday, 6 November, members of the Greenwood Park SAPS Trio Task Team and Crime Prevention Unit conducted a vehicle checkpoint (VCP) along Effingham Road, where they uncovered large quantities of drugs and fake alcoholic beverages.

According to Sergeant Basha Nyembe, Communications Officer at the Greenwood Park Police Station, officers stopped a white Toyota Cross driven by an Asian male. Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered five boxes containing tablets believed to be mandrax, amounting to approximately 10,000 tablets.

Sergeant Nyembe said: “The male suspect was detained after he failed to account for the drugs found in his possession.”

During the same operation, officers intercepted a red Renault Triber, operating as an e-hailing service, which was transporting a female passenger. Upon inspection, the team found a box of counterfeit Hennessy Cognac inside the vehicle.

“When questioned, the driver confirmed that he had accepted a request on his e-hailing app and picked up a woman carrying two large boxes containing black cartons of Hennessy,” explained Sergeant Nyembe. “The passenger sitting at the back also confirmed that the items belonged to her. The packaging appeared old, and the liquid inside had a strange smell.”

After further questioning, the woman admitted that the cognac was fake. She was immediately arrested, and the counterfeit goods were confiscated.

Sergeant Nyembe commended the officers for their vigilance and reiterated the SAPS’s commitment to combating the trafficking of illegal substances and counterfeit goods in the Greenwood Park policing area.
