The Rotary Interactors Careers Day was recently hosted by the Rotary Club of Durban-Morningside at George Campbell Technical School on 7 August . The event brought together more than 130 learners, educators, and Rotarians from six schools across Durban.
According to the club’s Director of Youth Services, Ash Maharaj, the Rotary Club has been running similar initiatives for more than 20 years. He explained that after the COVID-19 pandemic, participation from schools had dropped, leading the club to adopt a smaller and more focused approach.
The programme featured guest speakers from Capsicum Culinary Studio, The Foundation for Excellence, eThekwini’s Disaster Preparedness Programme, and the Global Domino Challenge, each offering learners insight into career and development opportunities.
Learners were exposed to various career paths, including employment prospects in the hospitality sector presented by Capsicum Culinary Studio, while The Foundation for Excellence focused on motivation and self-development in the broader world of work.
eThekwini’s Disaster Preparedness Programme encouraged learners to be proactive in managing disasters and highlighted further study opportunities in the field of disaster management. The Global Domino Challenge introduced a fun and innovative way for schools and clubs to raise much-needed funds for community projects.
For many learners, the event proved to be an eye-opener. Hailey Bithan, a Grade 10 learner at Sastri College, said the Careers Day was very insightful as she had not yet decided what career path to follow after matric. “The presentation by the Culinary School really caught my attention, and the programme as a whole inspired me to start a study routine and set goals so I can be successful in my matric exams in the years to come. I also feel that taking the business route might be a good idea, as I have an interest in real estate,” she said.
Rayhana Samuels, from George Campbell Technical School, shared that the programme made her realise how many career options are available after high school. “I am looking forward to pursuing a career in dermatology, despite my school not offering the required subjects to qualify for the course. It motivated me to explore further and not give up on my passion,” she explained.
The Rotary Club expressed gratitude to the presenters, as well as to Mr Rooy, principal of George Campbell Technical School, for providing the venue free of charge. They also extended thanks to the SPAR Group for sponsoring refreshments including muffins, bananas, apples, naartjies, and juices, while Capsicum contributed goodie bags for some learners.
“The day was a great success, and learners left motivated and inspired,” said Maharaj. He added that the contact details of all presenters are available to learners through their schools and Interact clubs for those wishing to follow up on the opportunities shared.
The day was described as both educational and enjoyable, leaving learners satisfied and better informed about possible career directions.
