Sunday, 9 May is a special day dedicated to mothers around the world. The day honours the great strides achieved by mothers and the vital role they play in the lives of their families and their communities. This Mother’s Day, we remember the hard-working women who have raised their children through challenges and made a success of it. Mothers from the Phoenix community shared their journey with The Phoenix Tabloid.

Sunford mother, Deshnee Naicker said: “My journey as a single, working mom has been challenging and rewarding. It’s been a painful experience – trying to make ends meet but the struggles we have endured brought my daughter and I closer together. We discovered an inner strength that we did not know we had. We look back on our trials as a refining process that have shaped us to become resilient women.” Another mother said: “When I hear the word mom, my heart melts, especially from my 20-year-old daughter who had been through many challenges. From a young age my daughter was diagnosed with hydrocephalus. The journey was difficult but because of faith and prayer, my beautiful daughter will be turning 20 this year. Being a mom is about sacrifice and love. It’s about your children being your first priority, teaching them how to survive, to be independent, to follow their dreams and put God first in everything. Our children make it worthwhile.”

Mother of three, Kammy Govender of Caneside, said: “Being a single mother has its hardships, good days and even unbearable days – the choices we make to give our families the best are not for our benefit. My children are my pride and joy. I love them so much that any sacrifice I make pales into insignificance. Mother’s Day reminds me that no matter how tough life gets, I am important because I can nurture the beautiful human beings I call my children. I was raised by an amazing mother who never gave up on me and who taught me to be a strong and resilient woman. I am grateful to my mother and to other mothers who bring joy into my life.” Sharmaine Lutchmandaas, a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother from Rydalvale, said: “We have been given the title ‘mother’ because God knew that we could handle the challenges that come with it. Giving up is not an option. Other mothers have been in similar situations and are victorious. Every mom is special, beautiful and unique. For those who don’t have a mother, you are not alone, God is with you always.”

The management and staff of Tabloid Newspapers take this opportunity in wishing all mothers a happy Mother’s Day for Sunday, 9 May.
