Umbilo resident, Elizabeth Daniel Strover, has challenged other residents to keep their spaces clean with the summer season fast approaching.
Strover said the challenge is for residents, business owners, home owners and tenants to mow their lawns, cut their grass, pull out weeds and clean up their pavements and verges to keep the Umbilo area clean.
She said the challenge was inspired by one of the members of Umbilo warriors, a community group in which her husband is a part of.
“Chris Randlehoff has the idea and shared it with a few friends and we all thought it was a wonderful idea. As a home owner and local estate agent in the area, I then decided to do my bit and challenge other home owners to do the same. The challenge is just to attract good people into the neighbourhood, and for us to be proud when we drive around.
There is nothing stopping any one of us from walking outside our gate and picking up the litter, pulling the weeds and cutting the grass,” Strover said.
She said living on the south side of the Stellawood Cemetery, they have cleaned and sprayed weeds along the entire street. “My husband and I have cut back hedges where our neighbours are perhaps too old to do so. I am hoping that the rest of the community can do the same. I am hoping that we all walk outside our comfort zones a bit and get to know our neighbours, and take some pride in our area. I have also engaged with some of the ward councillors and hope to get their help with refuse removal and grass-cutting. As well as keeping our parks clean by initiating clean-ups and maintenance of the grounds around Kenneth Gardens and the Cemetery,” Stover added.
She said a few residents have accepted the challenge and there is already a massive difference. “Initially the challenge was supposed to be for October, however, we have extended it to the end of November and I think it should be a quarterly challenge, for every street,” appealed Stover.
She called upon the entire community to participate and post before and after pictures on the Everything Umbilo Facebook page.
