Stray dogs in need of dog food

Stray Paws Animal Rescue and Welfare is appealing for donations and sponsorship of dog food for the organisation that rescues abandoned pets in and around the local township.

Stray Paws and Rescue is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) established in November 2019 with the sole purpose of rescuing neglected, orphaned and abused animals.

Shabnam Baran, marketing and communications for the organisation, said the NPO’s mission is to provide a safe home for previously disadvantaged animals, with the aim of reducing the number of neglected and abused cats and dogs. Baran said with the amount of stray dogs in townships, the organisation is finding it difficult to keep up with providing enough food for the abandoned animals.

She said: “We now need more food to continue with our feeding as these dogs depend on us for their daily meal. We urgently need food donations. Please consider donating a bag of food or a can.”

The organisation also has a Surrender Prevention Programme which gives people the opportunity to keep their pets instead of giving them away or taking them to the SPCA to be put down because they cannot feed their pets anymore due to financial constraints.

“We provide the food and the pets remain with their families. Currently most of our cases originate from low income areas as well as other welfare organisations or from emergency rescues. At Stray Paws we prioritise animal rescue and rehabilitation. We also aim to educate animal owners on proper care and handling of animals,” said Baran.

She added that caring for disadvantaged animals is extremely expensive and their average monthly veterinary bills are approximately R30 000. “Based on this we appreciate donations and sponsorship from individuals and companies in form of pet food, pet medical, pet accessories or monetary donations or sponsorship,” said Baran.
