Revolution Motorcycle Club has teamed-up with the Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre and Bavuke Foundation to collect and distribute donated used or new children’s books. Residents are encouraged to be part of this initiative by donating books which will be distributed to children in vulnerable communities.
The initiative titled, ‘Reading Revolution,’ will see children receiving story-books at open-air storytelling sessions. The Revolution MC bikers have embarked on a number of similar programmes over the years to encourage children to read.
President of Revolution MC Clive Pillay said that they will ride into Welbedacht and other underprivileged communities on Saturday and with the help of volunteers do storytelling, provide food packs and distribute children’s books.
In keeping with Madiba’s famous quote, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’, the Mandela Day volunteers will hand-out children’s books to promote literacy and the joy of reading.
“Reading and storytelling is fun and promotes literature and ignites your imagination. It develops language and emotions. By reading a book, children learn about people and places that they might not personally experience. This gives children a deeper understanding of the world around them and cultures that are different from their own. By owning their first story-book, we hope it encourages them to go regularly to the library. We will also be encouraging parents to read to their children,” said Pillay.
Residents are welcome to be part of the Mandela Day project by donating new or used children’s story books to the Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre this week. For more information, contact Clive Pillay on 061-429-2574.
