A former Durban taxi driver is over the moon after he recently recorded a song and music video with multi-award winning South African singer and rapper, Jabulani Hadebe, famously known as Sjava. The young rising star, Skhindi Ngcobo (30) also known as the ‘rapping taxi driver’ has described his sound as a new Durban wave hip-hop.

Ngcobo said his supporters can look out for his new song with Sjava which will be released on 18 November on all digital platforms, which include iTunes, YouTube, Spotify and on social media platforms. “I was always that taxi driver who played hip-hop for the passengers. I retired from being a taxi driver to chase my music dream in Johannesburg. My ambition which is to have more in life drove me to start rapping. I only realised later on that I’m really good at it. My sound is called isiZulu Saphesheya, it’s based off trap and has witty lines which I rap in vernacular. I have always had a dream of blowing up with my first project and so I made sure that I bring out that taxi vibe for listeners to experience something new. I was a full time taxi driver, and an upcoming rapper which wasn’t easy. I never had time to rest and had to constantly reinvest the money I made on the road,” he said.

Ngcobo said he is not afraid of taking on new challenges. “There are two moments I treasure the most in my career, the first is when I was called by Sjava to perform with him at Cotton Fest and the second was when Hollywoodbets chose my song for their Spina Zonke campaign and television advertisement,” said Ngcobo. He said his advice to upcoming rappers is to ‘shoot for the stars’. “Make sure you shoot visuals for your music. I never really started making waves until people saw me, so it’s important that you invest in your music videos. Fans can expect some of the best rap music they’ve ever heard from me. My intention is to take over the music game with my sound and put it on the map,” he concluded.
