Community champion and devoted philanthropist Sharika Sukhu has added another feather to her cap after receiving the prestigious Women of Wonder South Africa Award for her relentless service and commitment to uplifting society.
Sharika, a household name in Newlands West for her grassroots initiatives and heartfelt activism, has dedicated her life to empowering women and children—often choosing to do her work quietly, away from the social media limelight.
Her accolades are as extensive as her impact. She is the visionary founder behind The Queens Group on Facebook—a supportive online community that fosters solidarity and connection among women from diverse backgrounds. She also spearheads I Am Warrior Magazine, a publication that has captured hearts locally and internationally through its empowering stories of resilience, transformation, and triumph.

As the chairperson of New West Secondary School, Sharika has worked tirelessly to ensure that learners have access to a safe and nurturing educational environment. She is also the founder of Fertilizing the Soil, a youth development programme aimed at nurturing the next generation through mentorship, support, and personal development. Despite facing significant personal challenges, including poverty, harassment, and abuse, Sharika has turned her pain into purpose. Her journey has inspired many and garnered national and international recognition.
Speaking to theSpringfield Gazette, Sharika said, “This award is not about me—it’s for every woman who has ever been silenced, every child who has ever felt invisible. My mission is to ensure they know they matter and that their voices are heard. I never set out to seek recognition; I just wanted to help where I could.”
Her humility and quiet determination have earned the respect of many in her community and beyond.
