The red carpet is being rolled out for a night set to shine a spotlight on South Africa’s unsung heroes of storytelling, creativity, and grassroots journalism.
On Saturday, 31 May, the Balmoral Hotel on Durban’s beachfront will host the much-anticipated Mzansi Community Media & Creative Awards—a glittering event dedicated to honouring excellence in community media and the creative industries.

What sets this year apart is not only the calibre of nominees but also the presence of senior officials from the Department of Arts and Culture, affirming the government’s support for media diversity and creative innovation. In a strong show of solidarity with grassroots media, senior Durban-based members of the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) are also expected to attend, lending added prestige and recognition to the achievements of community-based storytellers and creatives.
Representing local excellence, Vimla Govender from Tabloid Newspapers’ Sales Department has been nominated in the Sales Representative of the Year category, while Bongekile Gumede, a senior reporter, is nominated in both the Best Reporter and Best Editor categories. Gumede will also represent The Springfield Weekly Gazette, which earned a nomination for Best Front Page.
“These awards are more than just a ceremony,” said Zinhle Cebekhulu, spokesperson for the organising committee. “They’re a celebration of those who inform, inspire, and influence local communities through their commitment to truth, culture, and creativity.”
