The man accused of murdering 22-year-old Keith Jeremiah Govender appeared briefly in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court last week, as anger continues to grow within the community over his release on bail. Mahendra Ramadrah (46), who was initially charged with attempted murder following the January stabbing during a thunee card game in Silverglen, now faces a murder charge after Govender succumbed to his injuries.
The matter was postponed to Friday, 15 May for further investigation. Ramadrah remains out on bail of R1 000. The latest court appearance has intensified public reaction, with many residents taking to social media to express frustration and disbelief that the accused remains free. In an emotional Facebook post, resident Kassy Naidoo described the incident as a brutal and senseless killing that has left the community reeling. She questioned how a disagreement during a social game could escalate into fatal violence and criticised the broader moral decline within the community. Naidoo also raised concern over the bail amount, saying it reflects a justice system that has failed the victim and his family.

She called on South Africans to unite in support of the Govender family and to demand accountability. Her views were echoed by numerous others online, with many rejecting claims of self-defence and arguing that no circumstance could justify the taking of a life.
Several community members also questioned why weapons were allegedly present at a recreational gathering, while others reflected on the lasting trauma faced by the victim’s family. Outside court, family spokesperson Nicole Boodhun called on the community to stand in solidarity with the family as the case continues. “We are calling on the community to join us as we continue to seek justice for Keith,” she said. The case is expected to return to the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court in May as investigations continue.
